NWEC celebrates 1st anniversary in Buyende district

Naamala Women Empowerment Charity celebrated its first anniversary during the Women’s Day celebrations in Busoga region, Buyende district on March 8, 2026.
Busoga sub-region has consistently reported the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in Uganda. According to 2022 survey data, 28.4% of girls aged 15-19 in Busoga had already become mothers, which is above the national average of 24–25%.
The anniversary celebrations were held at Buyende district headquarters. The Chief Administration Officer, Buyende District Michael Kanaku was the guest of honor.
The anniversary celebrations covered three days of skilling young mothers in Buyende and the neighboring areas. Women were skilled in business, knitting, electrical engineering, making Vaseline, chalk making, baking and making liquid soap.
NWEC also organized a health camp where women tested for HIV, pressure, diabetes and sexually transmitted diseases. They were treated and had counselling sessions from doctors. Men were offered condoms too.
Thirty young mothers were offered certificates in various courses from Namasuba College of Commerce and Kyabazinga College, Kamuli.
Besides paying rent for 10 women in Buyende Market for a year, NWEC also donated items like clothes, shoes, soap, basins, knickers, blankets and mattresses to the young mothers.
